RTRI REPORT October 2000

Outline of the Gauge Change Test Train

Kikuo TAKAO, Ken-ichi URUGA

We are developing a gauge change system for through-operation between Shinkansen lines (standard gauge) and narrow-gauge lines. A Gauge Change Test Train (GCT) was completed in 1998 autumn to confirm the basic efficiency of this system. The GCT is an experimental 3-motor-car electric multiple unit (EMU) train. It is designed to be able to run at a maximum speed of over 300km/h on Shinkansen lines, and over 130km/h on conventional lines under a catenary voltage of AC 25kV, 20kV (50/60Hz) and DC 1.5kV. It has been under an endurance test for high speed running at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, U.S.A. since 1999 spring.
