A train detection device by using microwave balises, COmputer and Microwave Balise Aided Train detection (COMBAT), has been developed. This device detects and tracks trains without contacting the rail. The safety and reliability of train detection greatly improves, when this device is used, because train equipped with ID-balises can be detected by devices on the ground, whereas the existing track circuit detects only "existence (0)" or "non-existence (1)" of the train. This paper shows the system configuration of this device, and concepts of fail-safe feature and train detection logic.
