RTRI REPORT January 2001

Recent Research and Development on Railway Signalling and Telecommunications

Tetsuo TAKASHIGE

As one of the recent topics for signalling, digital ATC, an intelligent train control system mounted on a car, has been developed and will be used soon for Shinkansen and other lines. A radio controlled train control system is also developed for practical use. For narrow-gauge lines, the development of a new system, safer and easy-to-maintain at lower cost, is expected.
For telecommunications, new telecommunication and network techniques are realized with rapid progress of Internet and mobile telecommunications. Low-cost and large-capacity telecommunications will be realized by applying those techniques to railway telecommunications.
In this paper, we describe the trends of ATC and ATS, movement of internationalization of specifications for the safety of railway signalling, and xDSL and IMT-2000 that are expected as a new telecommunication technique.
