The embankment and cutting surfaces of slopes along railway lines are often covered with protection works to prevent collapse due to rainfall. The protection works seem to be effective, as protected slopes seldom collapse. However, it has not been possible to quantitatively evaluate the durability of slope protection work. We confirmed that slopes do not collapse after they have been protected with protected works, even at rainfalls heavier than the critical rainfall for non-protection slopes. We propose a new risk evaluation method for slopes on the basis of this result.
