The Effect of Wheel/Rail Contact on Rail Gauge Face Wear

Ying JIN, Makoto ISHIDA

Gauge face wear is one of the main factors that determine the rail maintenance cost. In this study, FEM contact stress analysis was carried out to decide test arrangement for laboratory simulations using a large rolling contact test machine and to understand the actual state of wheel/rail contact. In laboratory simulations of gauge face wear, the variation of wear profile and wear amount of gauge face due to the attack angle of wheel to rail was investigated. In addition, the residual stresses of rail disc were measured and compared with those estimated by elastic-plastic analysis of FEM. As a result, it was found that the attack angle had a significant effect on gauge face wear.
