We carried out a long durability test of new contact wire made of copper clad steel at the A station of Shinkansen in 1987-1998 and surveyed in detail the deterioration of the contact wire which was removed from the test site. It is confirmed that, after the steel wire has emerged on the surface, the wear of the contact wire has decreased drastically with its contact surface remaining under a good condition. Furthermore, the contact wire has no damage inside or on its entire surface to show good corrosion resistance.
