Extension of Service Life of Corroded Hot Dip Galvanized Steel and Weathering Steel

Makoto TANAKA, Takafumi ENARI, Hiroto MACHIDA

No measures have been taken against the corrosion on hot dip galvanized steel (HDZ steel) or weathering steel, because they are considered to be long-term corrosion resistant materials under atmospheric conditions. To extend the service life of these materials, corrosion protection coating systems have been studied. For HDZ steel, it is indicated that the durability of the coating system is influenced by the condition of zinc surface and the decreasing rate of coating film thickness. For weathering steel, the durability of the coating system is dependent on the amount of salinity that is included in corrosion products. This paper reports suitable ways to extend the service life of steel structure constructed by HDZ steel or weathering steel.
