A new method is proposed to estimate the effect of trench and wall-in-ground to reduce train-induced ground vibrations. The method applies Kirchhoff's theory of diffraction to the problem of Rayleigh wave incident into trenches and walls in the ground. The validity of the method is examined by comparing the estimated vibration reduction effect with the results of several small-scale experiments and field tests.
