Treatment and Safety Evaluation of Industrial Wastes

Kazuhide KIMBARA

Industrial wastes containing toxic chemicals such as PCBs and heavy metals pollute soil/water, which should be decontaminated. It is the responsibility of the polluting company to use an appropriate treatment system to clear contaminated soil/water, whatever cost or time it may involve. It should also be noted that recycled materials should be managed properly. In Belgium, improper management of recycled oil caused dioxin contamination of chicken in 1999. Therefore, in the management of recycled materials, safety control is extremely important. The safety in dealing with industrial wastes should be evaluated by biological estimation systems as these methods can also estimate the toxicity of unknown compounds.
