The rail corrugation formed by the wheel load variation under a repeated load is one of the major problems in the rail/wheel system. This paper describes a fundamental study of the influence on the wheel load variation produced by wheel running of different track supporting stiffness. In this study, a floating ladder track and a track with directly fastened PC ties were used to simulate different track supporting stiffness. The wheel load variations were investigated by dynamic interaction analysis between track and vehicle with the train speed and rail pad rigidity as parameters, and with an without the rail surface roughness taken into consideration.
