This paper reviews the recent trends of the improvement of convenience and safety of railway infrastructure for the aged and the disabled. The transportation Accessibility Improvement Law was promulgated and enforced last year. This paper presents an outline of this law, introduces the philosophy which lies in the background and discusses some problems to be solved from the viewpoint of human factors, in order to improve railway facilities and vehicles from now on.
