Evaluation of the Application of Countermeasures to use FRP for spalling Tunnel Lining Concrete

Kazuyuki YOSHIKAWA, Yoshiyuki KOJIMA, Takashi MUGURUMA

Recently, carbon or aramid continuous fiber sheets are increasingly used with a bonding agent to prevent concrete from spalling from the tunnel lining. These methods are usually called the fiber reinforced plastic method (FRP). However, the criterion to design or select these methods hasn't been established.
This paper proposes a criterion to select to these methods and a method to evaluate the effect of FRP through a series of punching shear tests. As for the criterion to select countermeasures for spalling concrete, we adapt four steps according to the scale or type of spalling concrete through the analysis of past spalling concrete accidents. We also decide approximate application ranges for different materials of fiber sheet.
