We have been studying an application of superconducting wire to a transformer for rolling stock. Its merits are lightweight and high efficiency. This time we have carried out design study and we have got conclusion. The weight of the superconducting transformer is slightly smaller than that of conventional transformer and the efficiency is improved to 99% compared with that of conventional transformer 96% even if no further improvement is achieved in the wire performance. If AC loss is reduced to 1/10, the weight will be around 70% when compared with that of conventional transformer and the efficiency will exceed 99%.
