This paper describes vibration mode characteristics of three types of railway vehicles for a light-weight commuter train, a Shinkansen train, and a MAGLEV train. Excitation and running tests are carried out to measure the vibration acceleration at some points on roof, floor and side pillars, Natural frequencies and modal shape functions are then identified for each vehicle from measured data by using AutoRegressive Moving-Average (ARMA) models. Test results show that these three vehicles have different vibration characteristics especially in their vibration shapes.
