At substations of Shinkansen receiving electric power from an extra high voltage system, we have used modified wood-bridge connected transformers for power supply since they were introduced into Sanyo Shinkansen which started operation by using an AT power feeding system in March 1972. However, this transformer is extremely complicated because it has a step-up transformer. Therefore, we investigated a transformer which is simpler than the conventional one. To confirm a new type transformer obtained in our investigation, we manufactured a low voltage mini model. Test results showed that the proposed transformer is suitable for the Shinkansen AT power feeding system. This paper describes the basic performance of the new transformer and the test results.
