COMBAT (COmputer and Microwave Balise-Aided Train control system) has been developed to realise a block system which is capable of reducing system costs capital, operational and maintenance, while attaining a safety level higher than that of the present single-line block systems. The key feature of COMBAT is the centralisation of interlocking and block functions which utilise balise-aided train detection devices. Route interlocking is established by a combination of route locking and train IDs identified by the detection devices. The change of signal aspect from clear to stop when a train enters the route is realised by station devices, which is a decentralised function. This paper describes the configuration of COMBAT and its interlocking and block functions.
