This paper presents the results of evaluation on the carbon dioxide emission from railway infrastructures. A detailed estimation was carried out for the effect of construction and maintenance of infrastructures of Tokaido Shinkansen line. The calculation results revealed that the type of structure emitting the largest volume of carbon dioxide per unit length was bridges. Detailed calculations on typical bridge types were also presented.
