The noise at lower parts of railway cars consists of rolling noise, aerodynamic noise and driving device noise. The rolling noise is generated by the vibration of both rail and wheel. There are a number of answers for the question which the main source of the rolling noise is. To localize the noise from different sources at the parts in question, we measured the noise near the rails of a Shinkansen line and a conventional line by the sound intensity method. This paper describes several trials to separate the sources of the noise at the parts under investigation and those of rolling noise in particular based on the measured results.
