We investigated the deadman devices being used by 21 major private railway and subway companies in Japan. The structure and function of deadman devices were classified, and their rates of operation were analyzed. The function was analyzed for allowance time, alarm time, brake, release time and other factors. The structure and function of the devices were discussed together with new versions expected in the future.
