Vibrations and motions reduce the safety of passengers and crews when they walk in railway vehicles, which has long been disregarded, however. The present study conducted a questionnaire survey of about 1,400 people in order to investigate the difficulties the passengers and crews encounter when they are not seated. The results revealed that they have experienced postural instability more than expected, in suburban , intercity-expresses and Shinkansen trains, and that lateral motions and tilting of vehicles cause postural instability more while they are walking than while standing. This paper shows a vision of practical approach to establish some countermeasures against the situation.
