This paper presents recent researches of human factors to improve the safety and comfort levels of railway systems at RTRI. For the safeguard against accidents caused by human errors, we first introduce a study to propose new psychological aptitude tests for train operation divisions, a research to develop a new safety training system using personal computers, a investigation to minimize the risk of passenger casualties at train accidents and on other themes. We then present studies of new methods to evaluate riding comfort and researches to improve railway facilities for the aged and disabled from the viewpoint of Universal Design.
