In order to develop a new standard of riding comfort or check overall assessment of railway vehicles, methods to directly test passenger comfort are adopted. However, these methods have never been systematized, as there are a number of difficulties for implementation. This paper reviews some problems that are concerned with direct testing methods for passenger comfort: stimuli order and its effects, adequate sample of subjects, instruction for subjects, and evaluation scales of comfort.
