Guidance Systems for Wheelchair Users

Hiroshi MATSUBARA,  Noriko FUKASAWA,  Shuichi MYOJO

This paper presents two railway passenger guidance systems for wheelchair users. One is a system to make a travel plan before starting the travel. Passengers can use the system via the Internet by indicating the destination station to the system. The system then searches the best route for moving by a wheelchair while considering the easiest way to change trains. The recommended route is presented on the user's PC display as animations. The other is a navigation system installed on wheelchairs. Users can obtain necessary guide information when they are moving in a station. When a user indicates a place where he/she wants to go by voice, the system calculates the best route to the place and navigates the user thereafter by offering voice messages and pictures on the display. These systems can totally support wheelchair users in the railway environment by providing appropriate information for panning and executing travel.
