The ride quality on railway vehicles should be evaluated over a wide range of postural positions, because passengers in the train may be seated, standing or walking. The objective of the present paper is to demonstrate the characteristics of postural balance of walking passengers in comparison with that of those who are standing. A laboratory experiment was conducted to examine the relationship between the vehicle lateral motion at turnouts and the postural stability in walking and standing positions. The results showed some similarities and differences in the both positions.
