Measurement of the Degree of Fatigue and Difficulty Experienced by Wheelchair Users at Railway Stations

Koji OMINO,  Kohei FUJINAMI

Fatigue and difficulty experienced by wheelchair users at railway stations needs to be taken into account when the layout and facilities are planned in order to reduce the accessibility barriers. Therefore, a method to rate the mobility access was, therefore, developed by using a wheelchair measurement system developed by RTRI. The system was based on manually propelled wheelchairs specified by the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) and equipped with some kinds of devices available to measure the physical quantities for the rating of the mobility access. Experimental measurement was conducted by using the system at some stations. It was pointed out that there were some places where the mobility access was rated low.
