The purpose of this study was to apply the concept of social annoyance to railways, and analyze passengers' perception and behavior of annoyance in railways through a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire included three types of ratings for annoying behaviors : (1) degree of uncomfortableness, (2) importance of countermeasure, and (3) frequency of experience by respondents, which was completed by 2,719 passengers. A factor analysis showed that attitude ratings of (1) and (2) consisted of five factors which were labeled as almost the same. Furthermore, another factor analysis based on behavior ratings of (3) revealed five factors which are different from those derived from attitude ratings.
