Present Status and Subjects for Preventive Measures against Declines in the Arousal Level of Train Drivers

Tetsuo KURAMATA

Measures to prevent accidents caused by declines in the arousal level of train drivers are divided broadly into two categories. One is a back-up system not to cause accidents when the arousal level declines and the other is to prevent declines in the arousal level. In regard to the former, the possibility of serious accidents to occur has become extremely low since a variety of security systems such as ATS are introduced. To secure stable transport, including prevention of operation impediments such as missing a stop, however, preventive measures against the declines in the arousal level are an important subject from now on. This paper discusses approaches to this subject in the present and related problems in the future.
