The wheel backside pressure at guard rails and crossing section wing rails is one of the causes that limit the straight-line side passing speed on turnouts of narrow-gauge lines. In this study, we created structural analysis models for guard and crossing sections, discussed their strength against comparatively large wheel back-side pressure and confirmed that the existing reference value for the strength of guard section is appropriate. We also performed experimental studies on the limit of the derailment quotient to cause wheels to climb the rail when the wheel backside contacts a guard or wing rail and found that it is about 1.6 times that when a wheel flange contacts the rail.
