It is an important subject to improve the seismic stability of a bridge abutment and backfills against the level-2 seismic motions such as the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake. A novel and rational form of bridge abutment having high seismic stability has been studied. Based on past researches, a new type abutment with geogrid-reinforced cement-treated backfills is proposed. This paper describes an outline of the seismic deign method used to develop the abutment and results of full-scale field loading tests and dynamic analysis.
