We are developing a new ATP system interoperable with the existing system, which has been introduced into almost all narrow-gauge lines of JR companies. In this new ATP system, a speed reference pattern is generated at an on-board device, and the brake is automatically activated when the train speed exceeds the reference speed on the pattern. Therefore, the safety level of this system is higher than that of the existing system. Moreover, this system features a lower initial cost, since it uses most of the on-board and ground equipment of the existing system. This paper describes an outline of the new ATP system and field test results on the transmission characteristics between on-board and ground devices.
