Methods to measure the electromagnetic emission from railway systems and trains have been developed and international EMC standards on railway systems have already been published. In the meanwhile, various electrical equipment and radio devices are now used on railway vehicles. To satisfy the increasing requirements for electromagnetic compatibility between these electrical devices, therefore it is important to comprehend the actual electromagnetic situation in railway vehicles. However, appropriate measuring methods for the electromagnetic emission at the frequencies between 9kHz to 1 or 2 GHz inside railway vehicles have not been established. Thus, we have developed appropriate measuring equipment and methods for the electromagnetic emission inside railway vehicles, and subsequently a new measuring method to use a high sensitive 3-axis optical electric field sensor. This paper describes the new measuring method and some examples of measuring test results.
