As the concern about indoor environment has increased, it is now necessary to grasp the opinion and needs of passengers on the hygienic environment of railway stations. To identify the tasks of improvement, two surveys were conducted. One was a questionnaire survey of 651 passengers, and the other was a monitor survey of 154 selected passengers. This paper uses the term "monitor survey" to refer to the method to require the selected passengers to walk around railway stations and assess the degree of hygiene. These two surveys have proved that some passengers are highly concerned about the hygienic environment and antibacterial processed goods. In particular, it has been clarified that quite a few passengers feel discomfort when they sit on a toilet seat of the western style and grasp the handrails of stairs and escalators. This paper also discusses the differences in the results obtained by different investigation methods.
