Lateral thrusts and other dynamic factors cause buckling of continuous welded rail tracks when a train passes. To make clear the influence on the stability of tracks against lateral thrusts, we carried out a model track buckling test under vertical and horizontal loads to represent wheel loads and lateral thrusts. We used the finite element method to establish a technique to precisely evaluate track buckling, compared analytical results with those obtained through experiments, and applied this technique to analyzing track buckling in consideration of lateral thrusts under some track conditions.
