We applied independently-rotating wheel trucks equipped with motors of the direct wheel drive type to gauge-change vehicles for through-operation between standard gauge and narrow gauge lines. A couple of taper roller bearings support the rotation of wheels. Lubricating endurance is one of the most important subjects for wheel bearings because the outer wheel of bearing rotates with the wheel and centrifugal force ejects the lubricant outside. We developed a long-life grease supply mechanism to keep a satisfactory lubricating condition on the surface of taper rollers of bearings. We also obtained a prospect that the lubricating life of wheel bearings with the grease supply mechanism will reach the specified maintenance period for trucks.
