A number of defective conditions such as spalling of coarse aggregates have been observed in cast-in-place concrete tunnel linings covered with accumulated soot of steam locomotives. It is apparent that such defects have mainly occurred at construction joints or honeycombs existed since the beginning of concrete construction. A study was made to a mechanism of such defects; hence this paper describes the result of the study and countermeasures to cope with the defects.
