We have investigated the applicability of a superconducting traction transformer to railway rolling stock. From the viewpoint of lightweight, the superconducting transformer for railway vehicles needs to have a special winding structure compared with that for electric power supply fabricated until now. The windings need to be wound up as densely as possible and to be placed in a high magnetic field. Before fabricating the test transformer, we fabricated and tested two high-Tc superconducting coils that simulated the windings of the transformer.
