Environmental problems along waysides of railways include the following: noise, ground vibrations, micro-pressure waves adjacent to tunnel portals, low frequency pressure variations by passing trains, complex magnetic fields, weeds on embankments, environmental pollutants and others. It is necessary to mitigate these phenomena to aim at environment-friendly railways. This paper describes outlines of recent studies made on them at the premise of Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI).
