To clarify the factors influencing the evaluation of ride comfort in commuter trains, questionnaire distributions were conducted at 3 railway stations in a major urban center. 1,141 responses were returned by post by passengers. This paper describes the outline results of these surveys. Topics addressed in the paper are as follows: factors influencing total comfort evaluations in commuter trains, effect of passengers' density in rail cars on discomfort ratings, comparison of the results obtained from these questionnaires with the previous surveys conducted on express trains, and the postural stability of standing passengers.
