Deformation Characteristics of Freight Container Yard Asphalt Pavement Under Moving Wheel Loading Tests

Yoshitsugu MOMOYA,  Etsuo SEKINE

Recent years, large forklifts with heavy wheel loads are increasingly introduced to the freight container yard. In consequence, deterioration of asphalt pavement became a serious problem. To investigate the deformation characteristics of asphalt pavement under heavy wheel load of forklifts, moving wheel loading tests were carried out. The test results have shown that asphalt pavements with cement treated roadbed are suitable for heavy wheel loads. Moreover, the effect of ground contact area of forklift tire on the strain of asphalt pavement was evaluated by FEM. It has become clear that the strain in the asphalt pavement is significantly influenced by ground contact area of forklift tire. It has been concluded that the ground contact area is important factor in the design of asphalt pavement of container yard.
