In order to reduce diesel exhaust emissions, pertinent regulations to control the exhaust emission and objective automobiles have intensified in recent years. In Japan, regulations are applicable to on-road/off-road automobiles and ships, however, railway vehicles are impertinent to such regulations. In the USA and Europe, tight regulations implemented to railway vehicles. We describe the trend of diesel-emission control objective to diesel engines of railway vehicles and other transport sectors, and strategies to cope with emission reduction.
