The direct-drive traction motor system is a structure composed of wheelset directly connected with a traction motor without a gear unit equipped with a conventional electric train, and enables to compose of the lightweight and simple bogie. In addition, it is advantageous in terms of maintenance-free, prevention of transmission loss, and noise abatement due to no provision of gear unit. However, there are problems such that a unsprung mass becomes large and wheel exchanges become complicated. Therefore, we performed a detail design of bogie for commuter trains adaptable to the next generation with direct drive traction motor system, which adopted resilient wheels. Upon such a design, we paid a due consideration to have compatibility, maintenance-free, and cost saving factor such that the system can be equipped with conventional carbody. Furthermore, we verified by simulation with the designed bogie and found that there was no problem in terms of straight-line running characteristic considering a cornering characteristic and lateral distortion.
