Aerodynamic Forces Acting on and Lateral Translational and Rotational Motions of Intermediate Cars Traveling in a Tunnel

Yutaka SAKUMA, Masahiro SUZUKI

The authors carried out a theoretical analysis on aerodynamic forces acting on intermediate cars of a high-speed train traveling through a tunnel and translational and rotational motions of the cars. The aerodynamic forces are simplified to one-dimensional sinusoidal ones. Each intermediate car coupled and supported by springs and dampers has two degrees of freedom of translational and rotational motions. The results of this study show that (a) the lateral force and yawing moment calculated from the one-dimensional sinusoidal forces well explain the result obtained by running experiments; (b) the results of mode shapes in a steady state are qualitatively consistent with those of the previous work obtained by running experiments; and (c) the wavelength of the traveling sinusoidal force controls phase differences among intermediate cars of the train.
