Application of Maglev Technology to Conventional Railway System

Masaru IWAMATSU

The superconducting Maglev system has advanced successfully since the Maglev cars commenced running on the Yamanashi test line. As a result, the Maglev Practical Technology Evaluation Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan concluded in March 2005, "All the technologies of the Superconducting Maglev necessary for the future revenue service were established."
Therefore, we have put an emphasis on applying the superconducting technology and the linear motor technology cultivated so far to the conventional railways as the technical development since April 2005. In this paper, we outlined applicable examples centered on superconducting technology including also recent domestic and international topics, and described an overview regarding the major results of new R & D Progressed since April 2005.
