Estimation of Occurrence Frequency of Lightning Overvoltages on Wayside Signalling Equipment

  Lightning protection measures are essential for railway signalling systems because suspended operations or train delays due to lightning damages may cause social confusion. Therefore, we measured the lightning overvoltages on the railway level crossing system as a typical example of wayside signalling equipment in the event of substantial lightning stroke so that it is possible to obtain quantitatively the frequency of the lightning overvoltages occurred. In addition, we could estimate the occurrence probability of the lightning damages causes by exceeding a withstand voltage of the railway level crossing system.
