Since a panhead has been known as a main aerodynamic noise source of a pantograph on a high-speed train, reduction of aerodynamic noise of the panhead has been extensively studied. However, modification of the panhead shape to reduce its aerodynamic noise often has a small effect on the reduction of the whole pantograph aerodynamic noise. By some wind tunnel tests, aerodynamic interference between the panhead and the panhead support proved to have a large influence upon the aerodynamic noise of the pantograph. Therefore, not only modification of the panhead shape but also improvement of the pantograph support in order to decrease the aerodynamic interaction is necessary of sufficient aerodynamic noise reduction of the pantograph.
