Problems and Prospects on Dynamics of Boundary Areas in Railway System

Yasufumi SUZUKI

There are numerous problems in the boundary areas if a boundary area is defined as a domain between contacting bodies in the railway system or between individual research fields. Many problem areas are of conventional type as recognized for a lengthy period; however, sufficiently not resolved. Solution of such problems is inevitable to attain high-grade performance of the railway, and the problems are resolved only through cautious investigations. Railway Dynamics Division has been conducting researches focusing on various problems in the boundary areas, such as overhead contact line/pantograph, wheel/rail, and vehicle/track/under structure. This paper has described current major problems dealt with chiefly by Railway Dynamics Division, research activities on such problems and future prospects.
