To improve the safety of railways in snowy regions, we designed and developed a system for measuring the volume of snow accreted to running trains. This system applies the light cross section method and measure the volume of the snow accreted on the bogie side of the vehicle. The volume data of snow accretion is immediately transmittable to arbitrary points (i.e. a rail maintenance center), through the Internet. Field tests at Sapporo station revealed that the system is satisfactorily applicable to practical use as the system is capable of measuring the volume of the snow accreted on the bogie side and then transmit the data to arbitrary points accurately throughout winter season.
