In designing and maintenance of steel railway bridges, assessment of safety against fatigue failure is conceivable as a major factor. Hereby, proper designs and inspections have prevented fatal accidents due to fatigue damages. In the maintenance management of steel railway bridges, fatigue cracks and detectable by visual inspection carried out on scaffolding for repainting. Repainting normally takes place at intervals for 10through 20 years. Upon fatigue cracks discovered, remedy should be made sufficiently prior to a condition progressive to a serious degree and extent. Early detection of fatigue cracks is essential to minimize considerable amounts of maintenance cost. This report describes development of crack detector paints for the early detection.
