Environmental problems along waysides of railways include the following: noise, ground vibration, micro-pressure waves radiating from tunnel portals, low frequency pressure variations by passing trains, complex magnetic fields, weeds on embankments, soil pollution and others. It is necessary to mitigate the effects of these phenomena to aim at environment-friendly railways. This paper describes the outlines of recent studies made on them by Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI).
