Reduction Effect of Environmental Load with Shinkansen Service Section Extension

Masai MUTO,  Naoki AIHARA,  Taro TSUJIMURA

This study focuses on an exhaustive estimation of the modal shift for LCA calculation of a Shinkansen. For this calculation, we have used a modal split model as authorized by a public transport committee. This model has a characteristic to reflect strongly the inter-regional modal shift situation of the middle/long distance range. In this range, an acute competition of railways and airlines is observed. When we apply this model to the prediction in the short distance range, which the modal share of car is higher, we might excessively calculate quantity of modal shift to the Shinkansen. Therefore, we have attempted to revise the model and calculate the carbon dioxide discharge reduction quantity.
